COACHING OVERVIEW

These courses are designed to develop competencies required to enhance employees’ performance through use of coaching skills. These courses provide an introductory overview of Performance Coaching as it relates to the implementation of a Performance Management Program (e.g. DPMAP). Preparatory coaching concepts will be explored throughout the portfolio offerings, along with real-world Dept of the Air Force examples relating to the employee performance management process. The students will learn how to identify coaching philosophy and competencies necessary for improving performance planning, goals, and outcomes.

Note: When combined with the Leadership Development offerings, these courses provide a solid foundation of supervisory skills and civilian personnel management fundamentals. Recommended they be part of the deliberate development of all pre-leaders/supervisors.

Coaching Courses

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT COACHING FOR SUPERVISORS AND LEADERS (MAFHRMS427), PDS CODE: 2SZ

Performance Management Coaching for Supervisors and Leaders (PMCS) is a 3 module, blended e-learning course, which includes asynchronous and synchronous instruction in a virtual classroom setting. Students will complete assigned knowledge checks and create discussion posts in the designated learning management system (LMS) before joining live, instructor-facilitated webinars at pre-determined times during a two-week period. PMCS expands upon the fundamentals of coaching, delivered in the mandatory pre-requisite, asynchronous, web-based course, Introduction to Performance Management Coaching (IPMC); then applies those principles and competencies within the performance management setting through real-world scenarios tailored to the types of experiences DAF supervisors face. Students will learn the GROW model for performance management coaching and will learn how this process can provide structure to the coaching conversation. Students will be encouraged to discuss with their classmates how they plan to apply what they learn in PMCS, and to share their coaching strategies with their respective coworkers. Each webinar will conclude with opportunities for students to apply coaching concepts learned from the lesson. In a final capstone activity, students will be evaluated as they coach a fellow classmate through a live performance management scenario using the coaching skills and the coaching process learned in the class via the designated e-learning platform (MS TEAMS, for example).

Note: PMCS is specifically designed for DAF employees who are current supervisors or who are in the process of becoming supervisors or leaders in their organizations. In order to take PMCS, students must first pass Introduction to Performance Management (IPMC), the online, self-paced course which covers the foundational principles and skills of coaching. All asynchronous content will be housed in a learning management system (LMS), which will be monitored and graded by performance coaching instructors. The 3 live webinars and the live capstone coaching experience will all take place in a two-week time frame.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT COACHING FOR USAF ORGANIZATIONS (MAFHRMS429), PDS CODE: 2T0

Performance Management Coaching for DAF Organizations (PMCO) is specifically designed for DAF employees who are GS-13 or above and current leaders or future leaders in their organizations. PMCO is a 3-module, blended e-learning course, which includes asynchronous and synchronous instruction in a virtual classroom setting. Students will complete readings and watch relevant videos in the designated learning management system (LMS) before joining live, instructor-facilitated webinars at pre-determined times during a two-week period. The course is designed to give students a better understanding of their roles as leaders within their respective organizations and to enhance their capabilities to fulfill their leadership duties by adopting a coaching mindset. PMCO provides students with an intermediate understanding of the most current and relevant information for leaders to who desire to use performance management coaching to improve individual and organizational performance by promoting commitment, productive relationships, and a supportive coaching culture. In the first module of PMCO, students will explore the fundamentals of coaching. In Module 2, students will recognize how the coaching framework enhances the coaching process. Module 3 addresses coaching in a performance management setting to demonstrate how coaching can enhance individual and unit performance. The final Capstone exercise involves students coaching each other through a live performance management-related issue. Students will receive instructor feedback for their use of the coaching competencies in the 10 to 12 minute sessions.

INTRODUCTION TO PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT COACHING (MAFHRMS426)

Introduction to Performance Management Coaching (IPMC) is a foundational course open to all levels of employees within the DAF, and it is a pre-requisite course for all other coaching courses at CLDS. IPMC is an online 4-module, self-paced/asynchronous course housed in the designated learning management system (LMS). Students will view videos presenting the skills and competencies of performance management coaching and showing how these fundamental concepts can be applied to real-world examples of performance management issues with the Department of the Air Force. Students will learn the nine principles of performance management coaching (including trust, solution-focus, awareness, and responsibility) and the skills that a good coaching leader uses: active listening, powerful questioning, and high emotional intelligence, for example. Students will also learn about the GROW Model, which provides structure to coaching conversations, and they will be introduced to the concept of “coaching up,” in which employees learn how to have respectful coaching conversations with people in positions of power within their organizations. Each of the concepts taught will be further discussed in our live coaching courses: PMCS and PMCO. After each module in IPMC, students will take a quiz which will check their content knowledge before moving on to the next module. IPMC is an important course for anyone who would like to learn more about coaching and how it can be applied to the performance management context.
