Readout of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Milley’s Phone Call with Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff Gen. Koji Yamazaki

WASHINGTON--Joint Staff Spokesperson Col. Dave Butler provided the following readout:                 

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley spoke today with Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff Gen. Koji Yamazaki by telephone.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command commander Adm. Philip S. Davidson and U.S. Forces Japan commander Lt. Gen. Kevin B. Schneider also participated in the phone call.

The two military leaders exchanged views on the current security situation and affirmed that the United States and Japan remain opposed to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea. They discussed the United States’ unwavering commitment to the defense of Japan under Article V of the U.S.-Japan Mutual Security Treaty. The leaders also reaffirmed the strength of the U.S-Japan alliance and its readiness to address any situation in the region.  Gen. Milley and Gen. Yamazaki reiterated their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and welcomed further regional cooperation with partners, both in and outside the Indo-Pacific region.

The longstanding alliance between the United States and Japan remains the cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific.
