The new Alabama Shakespeare Festival play, "The Furniture of Home" opens today on the Octagon Stage. The play is recommended for ages 12 and older and runs through March 29 on the Octagon Stage. Preview performance tickets are available at ASF.

Southern residents did not have to live in Louisiana to vicariously experience the pain, suffering and horror of Hurricane Katrina. Southern Alabama also suffered devastating losses. One Alabamian has chosen to see some humor in a family's coping with the loss of their home after Katrina.

Alabama playwright Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder has written "The Furniture of Home," set in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama that focuses on Kendall, a teenage girl who lives with her grandmother, Dottie. They have lost their house in Katrina and must decide whether to fight for their land or take the money that developers offer. They learn to let go of the past and hold on to one another in this hilarious and heartwarming story about what makes a home.

The play features a cast of four including ASF veteran Greta Lambert, Ann Letscher, Alexis Camins and Philip Clark. Playwright author Wilder hails from Mobile. She also wrote the play "Gee's Bend" that became a blockbuster hit at ASF about the quilting women of Gee's Bend.

Preview performances are today and Saturday and opening day is Sunday. Regular performances are Tuesday through March 29, Tuesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and Maxwell Information, Tickets and Travel has regular performance tickets available at $36 each.
