Despite Department of Defense furloughs, the Maxwell Elementary/Middle School will start on time and as scheduled for the 2013-2014 school year. Teachers will be back for work days on Aug. 1 and students arrive for their first day Aug. 6, with pre-kindergarten students beginning school Aug. 19.

Furlough days for Maxwell Elementary/Middle School are Aug. 23, Sept. 3, 4, 20 and 27. The school will be closed on furlough days, except in cases when necessary to preserve administration and proctoring of standardized tests.

Base personnel and residents are reminded that there is a standing 15 MPH speed limit in all base housing areas and in the school zones on Maxwell Boulevard. between 7-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-4 p.m. Parents are asked to drop off students at the carpool lane on Magnolia Boulevard rather than in the circle at the school's front entrance. After the drop off is complete, they are to proceed to the end of Magnolia Boulevard and follow the circle in order to turn around. For safety reasons, do not turn around in the parking area adjacent to the drop off lane or at the crosswalk.

Alabama will be hosting its annual back-to-school sales tax-free weekend Aug. 2-4; clothing, school supplies, books and electronics will be tax free those days.
