Faculty Development Programming 

The TLC offers a variety of faculty development programming ranging from 45-minute workshops to the 12-hour Teaching Essentials Course. Some programs are offered recurrently while others are by-request. The team is available to work with school representatives to customize programming that is specific to your organization's needs.

TEC Certificate Course

The Teaching Essentials Course (TEC) is a core program of the Air University Teaching & Learning Center. Through both certificate and audit (i.e., a la carte) tracks, the TEC provides opportunities to explore evidence-informed teaching and learning strategies that promote student-centered learning in inclusive, multi-modal military educational environments. The TEC encourages student-centered learning by promoting flexible instruction to serve a diverse community of adult learners.

The course is fully online and self-paced (asynchronous). Self-guided modules, pre-recorded video content, lecture notes, and activities allow students to complete the course at their own pace without set deadlines. Instructors will monitor progress and be available for assistance. The TEC is available via continuous/rolling enrollment and is not cohort-based.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Design and facilitate evidence-informed instruction that is framed by theory and models relevant for adult learners in multi-modal environments.
  2. Promote an inclusive, engaging educational environment that supports a culture of lifelong learning.
  3. Engage in reflective practice to improve teaching performance and build relationships throughout military learning communities. 

Digital Badging and Certificates 

To earn a certificate of completion and digital badge:

  1. Successfully complete the certificate-track course and
  2. Pass the post-assessment with a minimum score of 85% and
  3. Pass the capstone teaching demonstration.

TEC Audit Track

The Teaching Essentials Course (TEC) audit track is offered by the Air University Teaching and Learning Center. The audit track provides learners the opportunity to explore evidence-informed teaching and learning strategies that promote student-centered learning in inclusive, multi-modal military educational environments. You can navigate through every lesson in the order in which you choose. There are no completion requirements, and we encourage you to use these resources as you see fit.

The Teaching Essentials Course encourages student-centered learning by promoting flexible instruction to serve a diverse community of adult learners. This course accommodates a variety of expertise levels, and novice through experienced instructors are welcome.

Throughout the TEC audit track, students will have the opportunity to focus on which academic areas they would like to learn more about, or improve upon, including:

  1. Design and facilitate evidence-informed instruction that is framed by theory and models relevant for adult learners in multi-modal environments.
  2. Promote an inclusive, engaging educational environment that supports a culture of lifelong learning.
  3. Engage in reflective practice to improve teaching performance and build relationships throughout military learning communities.

Learners in the TEC will develop the following instructor competencies, which are informed by the Air University Strategic Plan, Air University faculty needs assessments, the Air Education and Training Command 2020 Instructor Evaluation Checklist, the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, & instruction (IBSTPI), the Process for Accrediting Joint Education (PAJE) Standards, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSOC) regional accreditation standards.

  1. Explain the relationship between adult learning theories and a student-centered instructional model.
  2. Adopt the ethos of an educator.
  3. Apply a systematic, outcomes-based approach to instructional design that aligns learning outcomes with curricula and assessments.
  4. Plan for instruction across multiple modalities.
  5. Foster an inclusive learning environment that is conducive to diverse learners.
  6. Plan for purposeful use of educational technology to enhance learning.
  7. Effectively facilitate periods of instruction according to adult learning and student-centered learning principles.

The TEC is self-paced and allows students to begin and end when it best fits their schedules. There are 12 modules designed to be completed in about an hour each. The certificate track of the course is organized by progressive skill mastery and requires completion of each lesson in order to proceed to the next. The audit track allows learners to access any portion of the course at will.
While the TEC was originally developed for Air University educators, the course is now open to all AETC educators and those in the 1700 career field. Enrollment outside the U.S. Air and Space Forces is considered on a case-by-case basis.
This course is designed for newly assigned and beginning instructors. Established, long-standing instructors are also welcome to attend since the curriculum emphasizes current teaching techniques.
Content and technical support is available for TEC participants. Please allow up to 48 hours for a response excluding weekends and holidays.
