Spouses at Maxwell-Gunter are invited to learn more about the Air Force and their community during a free Heart Link program Feb. 10.

"Heart Link is an Air Force spouse's orientation program that is designed to help the spouses learn about the Air Force mission, how important they are to the mission, and about services available to them on base and through the military," said Kathi Byrd, information and referral consultant with the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

The program is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maxwell AFRC. The event includes lunch, and participants will receive a spouses' coin.

Byrd invited a variety of base organizations, including the legal office, finance, military family life consultant and support services, to present information and answer questions.

"Spouses will learn about military acronyms, TRICARE, base agencies, how to read an LES (leave and earnings statement) and many other things," Byrd said. "It is a great program with valuable information that can assist in navigating the military environment."

The event also includes a spouse panel, where participants can ask leadership spouses about their experiences and hear advice.

Though the program is geared toward new spouses, every spouse is invited to attend and learn more about the Air Force.

"Veteran spouses are encouraged to attend to gather information that may have changed over the years," Byrd said. "The Air Force is ever-changing and growing, and it is good to keep up to date on the information and resources available to families."

Heart Link also is a chance for spouses, both male and female, to meet and connect with other spouses, and build relationships in the community.

"Spouses are a valuable asset to the Air Force, and we hope through the Heart Link program they will see their importance," Byrd said. "Military spouses and families are the reason we have an Air Force mission."

Though registration is available the day of the event, participants are asked to sign up by Feb. 8 by calling 953-2353.
