ACSC team tops in mud run Published Oct. 19, 2012 By Rebecca Burylo Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - -- A little mud wasn't about to slow down the students of the Air Command and Staff College coming off a win at Montgomery's dragon boat race in August. As they braved the elements and fought their way through ravines, creeks and woods, the ACSC Division 4 Flight 37 team proved victorious in Prattville's inaugural Tukabatchee Area Council Mud Run Sept. 29. Pure grit, determination and a bit of friendly competition helped this team of seven tackle the challenges the course threw their way, from mud pits and sand dunes to hay bales and military crawls. However, the course was no match for these Maxwell majors despite losing some of their team along the way. Originally consisting of eight members, Maj. Stephen Anderson, Maj. Ehren Carl, Maj. Ben Chamberlin, Maj. Brian O'Grady, Maj. Vic Norris, Maj. Mike Pontius, Maj. Joe Gallaher and Maj. Abdul Haris, the team lost Carl and Anderson to intramural football injuries before race day. Carl's wife, Lindsay Carl, a former Air Force officer, stepped up to take his place and was the team's superstar, according to Norris, adding that it was her motivation that kept them going. "We are all type A personalities who are very competitive and run rather regularly," said Norris. "Ultimately, Lindsay's motivation probably pushed us all, and me lagging in the back of our team, across the finish line first. I don't know how she did it when I could barely breathe." Four made it across the finish line first, including Lindsay Carl, Chamberlin, O'Grady and Norris. Finishing in 34 minutes and 17 seconds, the team went back along the mud trail to find the rest of their flight and pulled them through the last stretch of the race. The mud run was sponsored by the Southern Orthopedic Surgeons and all proceeds benefited the Boy Scouts of America.
