MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Floyd, of the 42nd Healthcare Operations Squadron, is the noncommissioned officer in charge of medical logistics, Floyd oversees a team of seven Airmen and directs daily operations for four functional areas supporting 46 platforms and medical assets for the 42nd ABW and four geographically separated units. He also supervises medical equipment operations for 1,800 equipment items valued at $7.5 million.
"I believe an NCO is about being a mentor and leader for your Airmen," said Floyd. "As an NCO, you should build upon your subordinate’s strengths and help them improve their weaknesses. Airmen look at NCOs as the first steppingstone of new leaders. A good NCO provides mentorship for on-duty and off-duty to help their Airmen become more well-rounded."
Floyd demonstrated exceptional leadership by assuming the responsibilities of acting medical logistics flight chief, overseeing eight sections, 34 personnel, and leading a Defense Health Agency audit of 10 medical supply and equipment programs.
"Sergeant Floyd is a bank of knowledge that can always be relied on to either tell you the solution and teach you or help you find the answer," said Senior Airman Christopher Keeley. "His calm leadership always relaxes those around him, leading to stronger teamwork."
Through Floyd’s guidance, the team developed a temperature sensitive materiel products program that synchronized the 42nd Medical Group's cold chain management and secured cold chain items valued at $2 million, enabling care for 30,000 beneficiaries.
"Sergeant Floyd is always someone you can turn to for guidance," said Senior Airman Jorge Rosado. “He is knowledgeable and takes pride in his work. He is also very humble and willing to lend a hand."
Floyd exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional NCO and strives to lead his Airmen towards success.
"Sergeant Floyd takes care of his Airmen and always makes sure we’re recognized,” said Airman 1st Class Timia Haynes. “He also takes pride in teaching us how to be the best at what we do.”
The Crusader NCO Spotlight recognizes outstanding NCOs who have had an impact on achieving Team Maxwell’s mission, vision, and priorities.
The term "Crusader" holds deep historical significance within the 42nd ABW. During their deployment on the Free French Island of New Caledonia in 1943, the Airmen of the 42nd Bomb Group were bestowed with the nickname "Crusaders" by their French allies. Embracing this title, the unit adopted the Cross of Lorraine symbol, prominently displaying it on the tailfins of their B-25 Bombers. Over time, the 42nd Bomb Group evolved into the 42nd ABW, carrying forward the proud legacy of the Crusaders.
