Artists exhibit works at FRIC

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- The Muir S. Fairchild Research Information Center promoted its latest art exhibit with a meet-and-greet reception with local artists.

The event, sponsored by the staff association, drew an audience of about 50, May 17 to the rotating art exhibit in the library's entryway. They enjoyed refreshments and talked
about the paintings from members of the Capital City Artists.

"So many of our students come from all over the place," said Helen Lehman, a bibliographer who oversees the exhibit. "It's a good chance for them to meet people from the local community and see something different, not mission related."

The exhibit is a good opportunity for the artists, too, who have a chance to meet members of the military community and see their work on display.

"It's like seeing your children all dressed up," said Judie Hooks, who owns Judie's Studio, where the Capital City Artists meet.

For Hooks, the exhibit is the final step in the artistic process.

"I see (artists) starting off with a sketch, then deciding the colors," she said. "When they finish it and put it in the frame, it brings it to life."

Lehman and Brock Parker from the Capital City Artists arranged the exhibit and props. The paintings featured a variety of themes and subjects, including the beach, a pub, still lifes and Japanese magnolia trees.

Judy McLean, who has participated in many of the exhibits, enjoys having her artwork on display at the library.

"We've loved it every year," she said. "They get our artwork to an audience we don't usually get to, and Maxwell has always been generous with their reception of our paintings."

This was the fourth annual meet-and-greet, kicking of the spring exhibit. Lehman said the exhibit and event were possible due to the efforts of the staff association and library personnel.

"We couldn't have done it without them," she said.
