Tough economic times are not expected to hurt this year's Air Force Assistance Fund campaign, according to Capt. Benjamin Henley of the 42nd Air Base Wing Judge Advocate office and campaign project officer.

As the campaign began on Maxwell-Gunter Feb. 23, he explained military members may be inclined to contribute to the AFAF as opposed to other charities during the economic slump. The campaign continues through April 5.

Captain Henley said the AFAF was established to provide funds for charitable affiliates that provide support to the Air Force family including active duty, retirees, reservists, guard and their dependents along with surviving spouses.

The charitable affiliates include the Air Force Village Foundation; the Air Force Aid Society, Inc.; the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation; and the Air Force Enlisted Village, Inc.

These organizations help Air Force people with aid in an emergency, with educational needs, or to have a secure retirement home for widows or widowers of Air Force members in need of financial assistance, Captain Henley said.

"We got a good program and enthusiastic project officers," he said. Captain Henley said the goal this year for Maxwell-Gunter is $72,031. He added active duty members and retirees may elect payroll deductions for their contributions. Cash and money orders are also accepted.
