All USAFE-based Airmen Living in Dormitories Now Eligible for Temporary Lodging Allowance upon departure

Effective June 9, 2026, unaccompanied service members stationed throughout USAFE, who reside in barracks or dormitories, may be eligible to receive Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) upon departure from their overseas duty station.

The change, published as an interim update to the Army in Europe Regulation 37-4, establishes policy for service members stationed within the U.S. European Command area of responsibility to be considered for TLA benefits under qualifying circumstances.

For airmen living in dormitories, departure TLA is not an automatic entitlement. Eligibility is determined by local Housing and Dormitory Offices based on factors such as occupancy rates and the availability of government quarters.

“This change will bring meaningful relief to affected Airmen and enable them to remain laser-focused on lethality and readiness throughout their final days in our theater,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jason K. Trickey, Third Air Force command chief.

In general, TLA is intended to help offset higher than normal expenses incurred by a service member or dependent while occupying temporary lodging overseas.

TLA is available when it is necessary for a service member or dependent to occupy temporary lodging upon arrival at or immediately before leaving a permanent duty station (PDS) OCONUS, or during other periods as specified in the DoD FMR, Volume 7A, Chapter 68, para. 6804.

With the interim change, TLA may be authorized at the losing OCONUS duty station for up to 10 days before departure when government quarters are unavailable and to no fault of the service member.
