Maxwell opens the base fitness center for 24 hour access seven days a week as part of an Air Force Services Transformation Initiative Jan. 4, 2016, here on base.

The Air Force began testing the effectiveness of 24 hour gym access in 2012 with six state side installations including: Fairchild AFB, Wash., Scott AFB, Ill., F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., Tinker AFB, Okla., Little Rock AFB, Ark., and Joint Base Andrews, Washington D.C.

24/7 access gyms have been a common norm for commercial gyms, but on-base gym patrons have been limited to employees work schedules.  With the new 24/7 access, shift workers or early weekend risers don't have to sacrifice their workout, but can do it at their own convenience.

"We have a lot of availability during the open hours, but this [24/7 access] makes it available no matter what shift you're on. No matter the time, you can work out at the Fitness Center," said Jessica Rudolph, 42d Force Support Squadron assistant operation manager.

However, due to manning, there are restrictions to the 24/7 access. The fitness center will be unstaffed during the non-duty hours.
As safety precautions, the installation has installed a security system including cameras, an emergency phone and card readers for secure building access.

"Safety is a big issues, so we try our best to prevent any injuries, also we highly encourage the wingman policy, come with a buddy just in case," said Laura Bohannon, 42d FSS assistant operation supervisor.

Also as a result of the lack of manning, the weight and cardio rooms are the only areas that will be open 24/7. The aerobics room, basketball court and locker rooms will be closed during the non-duty hours.

24/7 gym access is available to all Airmen on base, retirees and dependents over 18 years of age.

Those interested in gaining 24/7 gym access will need to bring their CAC card to the Maxwell Fitness Center front desk to sign a statement of understanding and be put into their system. Retirees and dependents will need to show their military I.D. card and will be given a standard gym access card.
