DR. MARK ANARUMO

  • Published

Dr. Mark Anarumo is an AD-26 Department of the Air Force (DAF) civilian serving as Deputy Director for the Air War College (AWC) Enterprise, Air University, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He advises and supports the AWC Commander as the DAF’s principal agent for resident Senior Officer Professional Military Education (PME) via AWC, Intermediate Officer PME via Air Command and Staff College (ACSC), strategic-level strategist development via the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS), and preparation of international military officers for senior leadership roles via the International Officer School.

Dr. Anarumo engages internally with subordinate Schools and Centers, and externally with Air University, the DAF, and Multinational, Interagency, and Joint partners to ensure AWC Enterprise delivers full-spectrum, outcomes-based education producing U.S. and International Commanders, Staff Officers, and Strategists. He ensures faculty, staff, and students possess a warrior ethos, think critically, and understand contemporary leadership methods, while cultivating relentless focus on lethality of thought and action.

Following service as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army, Dr. Anarumo attended college on the G.I. Bill. He entered the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFROTC) at Rutgers University, where in 1994 he was commissioned as an AFROTC Distinguished Graduate while earning his Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice. Dr. Anarumo has deep experience in leadership development, building high performing teams, international relations, terrorism, political violence, and higher education executive leadership. Dr. Anarumo served as a squadron commander in the U.S., Korea, and Kyrgyzstan; as a Vice Wing Commander in Turkey during events leading to the 2016 coup d'état; as Chief of Co-located Base Reactivation in 2018 during elevated tensions on the Korean peninsula; and as a Permanent (Full) Professor at the US Air Force Academy as Director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development. He retired in 2020 following 30 years of uniformed service to serve as president of Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.
