New employees will begin their learning journey with the New Employee Orientation, or NEO.  NEO offers videos and other resources to help new DAF civilian employees succeed in their jobs and successfully incorporate into the DAF organization by understanding 4 key areas: What it means to be a DAF Civilian, Structure and Mission of the DAF, DAF Culture, and Training and Development

NEO graduates are invited to join our Developing Better Civilians webinars.  We’ll discuss key topics important to new civilians, give you opportunities to ask questions of experts in the field, and help you connect with fellow new employees.

As a Department of the Air Force (DAF) Civilian, you do not wear the uniform; however, you will work and interact with Active Duty, Reserve, and Guard members to provide every kind of support service needed to fulfill the DAF mission.


To help you in your day-to-day dealings, the Civilian Leadership Development School has developed this toolkit especially for you. The topics covered will be informative as well as interesting. The toolkit covers a variety of situations you may encounter. While it may not cover every situation that will occur, we hope it will help explain the basics and provide you with resources necessary to handle most situations. 

Individual Development Plan (IDP) Guide

This guide explains the why, when and how of IDPs.  Filled with suggestions for useful development goals for new employees, this guide will help you build your first IDP with the DAF.

New Employee eXperience Track (NEXT)

 Provides a roadmap outlining performance expectations for your probationary period, facilitating professional development, and preparing you for the formal probationary period certification process. It directly supports the Department of the Air Force (DAF) by ensuring a competent and engaged workforce contributing to organizational goals and the efficient execution of the DAF mission.
