Gregory Baker will retire as a Foreign Studies Specialist after dedicating 53 years of service to the Maxwell Air Force Base community.

Baker’s career began on June 9, 1969, as an assistant professor of language at what is now known as the International Officer School. Over his five decades at IOS, he also held titles such as anthropologist linguist, chief of foreign disclosure office, and management of international affairs.

“I’ve had the opportunity to meet and teach some great people,” said Baker. “I’ve seen over 12,000 students come through the school.”

In 1974, Baker was the first civilian selected to attend Squadron Officer School in residence. He also had learning opportunities at Air Command Staff College and the Academic Instructors Course.

Baker has received many accolades throughout his career. He says his most notable award was a medal from the Venezuelan Air Force; he’s the only person in Air University history to receive accommodations from the Venezuelan Air Force.

Baker has committed over 400,000 hours to the 42nd Air Base Wing.

“I’m really going to miss this place. My time here has never been boring,” said Baker. “I’ve not only met wonderful people in the United States Air Force but also amazing people from over 140 different countries. I’ve loved working with everyone; we became a family.”
