The Air Force Professional Financial Management Course (PFMC)

The Air Force Professional Financial Management Course (PFMC) provides mid-level Air Force financial managers a broad financial management education that includes developing leadership skills; improving critical thinking, analytical, and decision support capabilities; and expanding overall financial management abilities. The faculty uses lectures, interactive seminars, small group discussions, guest speakers and facilitated exercises to help students meet the course’s learning objectives.

As an educational course, to get the most from their PFMC experience the faculty also expects the students to fully engage in their own learning by properly preparing for and actively participating in all course activities. Finally, students must successfully complete several in-course assessments to earn their graduation certificate. Students also earn credit toward their DoD FM Certification Level 2 requirement and/or earn continuing professional education (CPE) credits applicable toward other certification programs like the Certified Defense Financial Manager. PFMC uses electronic media to deliver a paperless (for the most part) course, so students must either bring their own laptop or have DFM&CS issue them one upon arrival for use during the course. Students should have basic computer, word-processing, and presentation software knowledge before attending the course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The PFMC provides mid-level education for Air Force personnel in AFSC 65F4, 6FXXX, and civilian equivalent in the knowledge and skills needed to perform duties as Financial Management Staff Officers. The scope of training includes leadership and professional development, strategic plans and contingency operations, decision support, and financial management operations.

GOAL OF THE PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT COURSE (PFMC): Develop greater knowledge, analytical abilities, critical thinking skills, and leadership for mid-level Air Force Financial Management professionals supporting Air Force readiness and America's Airmen.

The faculty and staff are committed to providing students a "world-class" mid-level financial management education. Faculty instructors deliver foundational lessons; use select guest lecturers to expound on those and/or other topics; and employ guided discussions, practical exercises, realistic case studies, and other active learning events to help students apply their new knowledge and skills in a low-threat learning environment. The PFMC curriculum includes four focus areas: Leadership and Professional Development, Strategic Plans and Contingency Operations, Decision Support, and Financial Management Operations.

PFMC is a "near paperless" course where the faculty provides most of the class material (e.g., schedules, assignments, etc.) electronically through the School’s online learning management system. The faculty also assigns students to seminars for the purposes of completing various small group discussions and hands-on exercises. Therefore, to successfully complete PFMC students must be comfortable working in both electronic and small group environments that greatly enrich the learning experience of all students.

PFMC provides students an opportunity to work on their communications skills by (1) requiring all students to successfully deliver two short presentations, (2) requiring select students to introduce a guest speaker, and (3) offering all students an opportunity to participate in an optional "SpeakEasy" elective modeled after the Toastmasters Program.

While normal class hours are 0745-1630, students often spend additional time outside of those normal hours completing assignments/group projects.
