MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Starbase Maxwell has provided over 1,500 River Region students access to Department of Defense wealth of expertise in Science Technology Engineering and Math career fields this year.
The program, established in 2004, is a unique and innovative DoD STEM awareness and outreach program that creates a bridge between DoD and civilian communities.
“We have grown currently to consistently operate at four classrooms daily, with some weeks operating five classrooms daily,” said Kirk Alexander, Starbase Maxwell Director. “The goal is to have the five-classroom model as our standard and service 5000 students per academic year.”
The mission of Starbase is to expose our nation’s youth to the technological environments and positive civilian and military role models found on Active, Guard, and Reserve military bases and installations, nurture a winning network of collaborators, and build mutual loyalty within our communities, by providing 25 hours of exemplary hands-on instruction and activities that meet or exceed the national standards.
“We hope that students will leave STARBASE with a newfound love for STEM career fields,” said Alexander. “We also hope to inspire visiting teachers to implement more STEM activities into their lessons.”
