Bakers, find your best recipes, preheat the oven and prepare to compete for prizes when the Maxwell Event Center hosts a baking war Oct. 24.

"They should make their best dessert and bring it by the event center with the recipe," said Lee Lindsay, MEC supervisor. "Anything from cookies to cakes to pies, as long as they think it's their best dish."

Participants can bring entries on disposable trays to the MEC between 6:30 a.m. and noon. Judging will take place that afternoon, and winners will be announced Oct. 25.

"We're going to take the recipes and compile them into a cookbook to give to participants," Lindsay said. The recipes also help the judges avoid food allergies.

Baked goods will be judged on taste and appearance, and the first-, second- and third-place winners will earn prizes.

This is the first time the MEC has hosted a dessert competition, and staff believes this is a good opportunity for the Maxwell community to show off Halloween and holiday season treats.

Bakers are welcome to bring more than one entry and should bring enough for several judges to sample, said Gus Etheridge, lead recreation specialist.

Register by Oct. 21. For information, call the MEC at 953-7370.
