Asian heritage celebration begins Published April 27, 2012 By Kelly Deichert Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- The Maxwell community will kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Tuesday, the first of three programs offered in May. "I believe it is important for people to recognize this month as it is an observance that pays tribute to the many Asian and Pacific islanders that were an important part of shaping America's past, present and future," said Gwendolyn Halbert, chair of the planning committee. The proclamation designating May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month will be signed at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Maxwell Community Library. Light refreshments will be served. Maxwell Elementary Middle School students will compete in an art contest, with an entry deadline of May 11. An assembly May 22 will honor winners. The public is invited to a food-tasting, including cultural presentations, from noon to 1:30 p.m. May 23 at the Maxwell Event Center. Food donations are welcomed. Halbert said she hopes this month creates "a greater appreciation and understanding of what the Asian Pacific culture brings to our Air Force community through a variety of cultural demonstrations, food tasting and the encouragement of youth participation."
