The 42nd Air Base Wing Legal Office will open its tax center Wednesday, offering military members and their families free filing services.

Appointments are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday but closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. in building 804 at Maxwell by calling 953-4486.

The staff is trained to complete basic returns. "The tax center is not staffed to complete complex returns to include capital gain sales, small business and self-employed individuals, and rental properties," said Capt. Jon Paul Calandruccio, chief of general law.

He advises clients to bring all applicable income documents to the appointment, including a copy of last year's return, W-2 forms and interest and dividend statements. They also must bring a Social Security card or copy for each taxpayer, spouse and family member listed on the return.

For direct deposit of the return, the taxpayer should bring a check with the account and routing numbers.

Those claiming childcare expenses must have the name, Social Security number and address of the provider.

When couples prepare a joint return, both spouses must sign the documents, though both do not need to be present at the appointment, Calandruccio said. If possible, one spouse can bring home the paperwork and return it to the tax office with both signatures. If one spouse is deployed or unavailable, the spouse with a power of attorney can sign for both.

The tax center helps the community save money every year. "Last year, the tax center helped Airmen and eligible beneficiaries file nearly 1,700 tax returns, earning them more than $1.5 million in tax refunds and saving the Maxwell community over $237,000 in tax preparation fees," Calandruccio said.
