The Maxwell Compost Facility recycles natural materials on base, providing mulch and compost to all Department of Defense employees, retirees and their families.

The compost consists of leaves, grass, shrub clipping from throughout base, as well as horse manure from the stables. This mixture of natural, raw material is left to deteriorate for a few months before it’s is processed through a compost screener.

“We are giving back to the community. In this day in age, everyone is recycling and composting is really the same thing, and saves you money,” said James Cooper, 42nd Civil Engineering Squadron Compost Facility supervisor.

Air Force retired Maj. Lonnie Shoup says that he has been taking advantage of the base program for almost 20 years now.

He explained that he and his wife live in the country, and it’s great that they have something readily available to use in their gardens in place of the regional poor quality soil. He estimated that he saves $300 yearly by using the compost on base rather than buying it from a retail store.

The Compost Facility is open Monday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 1:15 p.m., Friday is only open from 7:00 a.m. – 9:15 p.m.

However, compost and mulch is also available at the facility’s self-help site across the flight line anytime.
