Airman Leadership School

Background:

Airman Leadership School is the first level of enlisted professional military education and prepares Senior Airmen selected for promotion for positions of greater responsibility. The course consists of 192 classroom hours over 24 academic days. It teaches leadership skills required of supervisors and reporting officials throughout the Air and Space Forces.

The mission of this course is to develop SSgt(selects) by strengthening their ability to lead, follow and manage while they gain a broader understanding of the military profession. ALS is required for promotion to Staff Sergeant (E-5).

CSAF Action Orders:

Action Order A – Airmen-Line of effort: Transform the way we learn across all facets of the USAF Education and Training.

Action Order C – Competition: Ensure PME educates Airmen for competition including the strategy, force design, and warfighting approaches for key adversaries.

The objectives of the faculty of ALS are to:

  • Provide instruction and guidance to enable graduates to identify, develop, and utilize cognitive strategies to solve Air and Space Force problems
  • Encourage graduates to think critically and thoroughly in order to provide sound and candid advice
  • Help graduates understand the steps to developing credibility, the duty to adhere to obligations, and sustain a willingness to be held accountable
  • Assist graduates to use their knowledge and skills to be responsive, flexible, resilient, and adaptable to uncertain situations and problems
  • Encourage graduates to develop acute awareness of the principles of good discipline

Learning Outcomes:
Graduates of the resident ALS will be able to:

  • Illustrate how to lead and supervise junior enlisted members
  • Demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication appropriate for supervising junior enlisted members
  • Demonstrate military professionalism appropriate for supervising junior enlisted members

Leadership and Supervision Outcomes:  Graduates of ALS will be able to Illustrate how to lead and supervise junior enlisted members; they will be able to:

  •  apply principles of leadership and decision-making while developing and maintaining positive relationships with team members and key stakeholders.
  • apply principles of supervision, including performance evaluations, counseling, and discipline.

Military Studies Outcomes: Graduates of ALS will be able to demonstrate oral and written communication appropriate for supervising junior enlisted members; they will be able to: 

  1. demonstrate basic knowledge of the key principles and concepts related to military studies.
  2. describe their role in the larger context of joint military operations.

Communication Outcomes:  Graduates of ALS will be able to illustrate how to enhance the military profession appropriate for supervising junior enlisted members:  they will be able to:

  1. demonstrate the ability to use written and oral communication effectively in a military setting.
  2. infer the importance of maintaining operational security, and the need to protect sensitive information.
